The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a Mumbai-based Income Tax commissioner for illegally amassing wealth worth Rs 2.29 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income.
CBI sources said that A K Purwar, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and Income Tax commissioner (appeals), had abused his official position and accumulated huge assets either in his name or in the name of his wife and relations.
The unaccounted wealth and some incriminating documents were detected following searches conducted at the official's residence in Mumbai. The properties included Kisan Vikas Patra and other saving investment worth Rs 2.17 crore, jewellery (rs 16.48 lakh), 45 expensive watches including six Rolex, five Rado, four Omega, three Cartier, three Baurne and one Mont Blanc (rs 5.19 lakh), 45 bottles of expensive foreign liquor and 13 bank accounts in various cities.
The sources said that Purwar, who led a lavish lifestyle, had also bought flats in Delhi and Ahmedabad, a bungalow in Indore and a land plot at Agra. Besides, the accused had privately traveled abroad 16 times during his career along with wife and two daughters to countries like the US, the UK, the UAE, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
The CBI had earlier arrested him redhanded while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in his office at Piramal Chambers, Mumbai on the complaint of an assessee. The official was then remanded to judicial custody.
