Jaipur, Nov 21: Uttaranchal government in an attempt to improve the economy of the hill state is taking various steps including setting up an international airport at Dehradun and exploiting its hydel power potential, the state's Minister for Information, Indira Hridayesh, said here today. "While efforts are being made for an international airport at Dehradun, another commercial airport is being planned at Pantnagar for export of fruits from the state," Hridayesh told reporters.
Exports of leechis has started from the state and many other fruits can be added to the list once a commercial airport at Pantnagar is developed, she said adding land for it had already been earmarked and a survey conducted.
Uttaranchal government had identified 5,000 acre of land in Pantnagar for developing non polluting industries for which 550 applications had been received from entrepreneurs.
Anil Ambani, vice chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Ltd., had shown interest in a power transmission project while Tatas were keen to have a hotel in the hill state, Hridayesh said.
"We want Uttaranchal to become the largest hydel power generating state in a decade as it has tremendous potential in this sector," the Minister said.
A bio-tech research institute is being established under Pantnagar University and farmers are being wooed to take up herbal farming in a big way, the Minister added.
