Ludhiana, Sept 03: The condition of star hockey player Jugraj Singh was stable after he successfully underwent a seven-hour operation at the Dayanand Medical College Hospital here.
Dr J L Bassi, head of the orthopaedics department of the hospital who operated on the penalty corner specialist, said Jugraj's right elbow had been badly damaged in the car accident late last night.
"To regain his old form Jugraj will have to undergo vigorous physiotherapy," he said adding the player had regained consciousness and was doing fine.
Jugraj's sister Rajbir Kaur, a former hockey player, said she was confident that her brother would come out of the trauma and return to action soon.
"My brother is a lion-hearted man and he will not be deterred by the setback," said Rajbir.
Jugraj's father Harjinder Singh, who was seen waiting anxiously for several hours outside the operation theatre surrounded by a group of hockey players, said in an emotional voice, "No doubt Jugraj belongs to me, but in a larger sense he is son of the nation."
"I am overwhelmed by the anxious inquiries by scores of his fans and well-wishers. Even Sports Minister Vikram Verma and Indian Hockey Federation president K P S Gill have called me up to express their concern," he said.
