Israeli helicopter gunships attacked a Palestinian military compound in the southern Gaza strip early Saturday, Palestinian officials and witnesses said. They said at least eight missiles were fired at a compound in Rafah containing offices of the Palestinian military and general intelligence services, as well as of force 17, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's elite bodyguard unit. There was no immediate report of casualties, sources said adding the compound had been evacuated in anticipation of an Israeli strike.
The Israeli army had no immediate comment beyond saying it was investigating the report. Bureau Report
