St. Petersburg, May 30: After completing his successful tour of Germany, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived here this evening to attend the tercentenary celebrations of Russia's former imperial capital at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. On arrival at St Petersburg's 'Pulkovo' International Airport, Vajpayee was received by Russian deputy foreign minister Alexander Losyukov and other officials. Keeping in mind the security considerations, the Russian hosts have decided not to hold any welcome ceremonies for over 40 heads of states and governments specially invited by Putin to attend the gala celebrations of 30th birthday of his home town. The international and domestic sectors of 'Pulkovo' airport have been closed for regular flights for three days as 96 planes carrying VVIPs are to land. US President George W Bush is scheduled to join his foreign colleagues tomorrow and is to hold summit talks with Putin on Sunday after their departure. Twenty thousand police and hundreds of secret service agents have cordoned off the central parts of St Petersburg where the foreign leaders would be moving. Special units of Russian Air Force are busy intercepting rain clouds to provide dry and sunny weather for the foreign guests during the gala celebrations. Bureau Report
