Chennai, Aug 26: Nearly 1,000 gastro-enterologists from different parts of India, including 200 international experts, will participate in the four-day seventh biennial conference of the Asian Society of Hepato-Biliary Pancreatic Surgery (ASHBPS 2003), beginning here on August 28.
World renowned hepato biliary and liver transplant surgeon, Prof. Emilo Vincente of Spain, among others, would participate in the conference, Prof.B Krishna Rau and Dr.V Jeganathan, president and treasurer respectively of the ASHBPS, told a press conference here this evening.
Prof. Emilo Vincente is the only surgeon in the world today who could take out the liver from a patient, place it on a table, remove the tumour and put the liver back into the patient. 'This procedure is known as bench surgery' and Dr Emilo attempted it five years ago in his country.
The Indian surgeons and physicians would share their experience by interacting with their international counterparts various problems, especially liver transplant, Prof Rau said.
Such conferences would help Indian doctors, especially PG students personally meet international experts and learn about the latest techniques and surgical procedures, Dr Jeganathan said.

Nearly 550 scientific papers would be presented during the conference, Prof. R Surendran, organising secretary for the conference said.
