New Delhi, July 24: Government is considering a proposal to provide for reservation to other backward classes (OBCs) in educational and vocational institutions, Lok Sabha was informed today. Pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes under which financial assistance is provided to the state governments and union territories for grant of scholarships to eligible students from OBCs is also being implemented, minister of state for social Justice Kailash Meghwal said in a written reply.
Quota: Government has initiated action for setting up of a commission to study and recommend reservation for the economically backward classes not covered by the present reservation policy, he said.
The concerned ministries and departments, including department of legal affairs, are being consulted in the matter, he said.
Kargil: There are no specific intelligence reports to suggest Pakistan's plans for another "Kargil" like operation but all aspects of threat from the neighbouring adversary are taken into account while formulating India's plans and operations, Defence Minister George Fernandes said.
Trishul: There have been some technical delays in the development of short-range surface-to-air missile Trishul due to technological problem and the project was delinked from user services, he said.
In view of this, the services have been allowed to meet their urgent requirements through import, Fernandes said.
Bofors: There are no plans to manufacture Bofors like guns indigenously, Fernandes said adding once army finalises acquisition of 155mm towed gun, indigenous production can be planned with transfer of technology.
Irregularities: Some irregularities have been detected in the western naval command, mainly concerned with certain individuals in the procurement and inspection agencies seeking gratification and favours from suppliers, he said.
The matter is under detailed investigations being conducted by a departmental inquiry, which is also investigating deviations in procedures, if any.
However, there has been no report of any substandard equipment having been procured and therefore no adverse impact on the navy's strike capability has come to notice, he said.
Anti-mine boots: The first version of anti-mine boots, developed by DRDO for protection during breaching of mine field, has undergone successful trials while the body protection suit, to provide protections to defence personnel against splinters and fragments of anti-personnel mines, has been introduced into service, Fernandes said.
T-90: A Russian warranty team of experts is in the country to rectify technical snags in T-90 tanks, he said.
Jackets: The trials of bullet-proof jacket samples, provided by Indian vendors, have been completed and the report of the 'trial team' is under the consideration of the defence ministry, he said.
PTA: Price negotiations have been completed for series production of pilotless target aircraft for customers and their production will commence after placement of orders, the Defence Minister said. Bureau Report
