Ahmedabad, July 27: The two-man riot inquiry commission, probing the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002, would begin the second phase of recording statements of riot victims/witness from the city from Monday onwards.
The commission, comprising Justice (Retd) G T Nanavati and Justice (Retd) K G Shah, is scheduled to cover six police station areas dominated by minority community persons during the second phase scheduled from July 28 till August 1. Though no gruesome killings occured in areas like Shahpur, Karanj, Kalupur, Sher Kotda, Khadia or Gaekwad Haveli during the post-Godhra communal violence that engulfed most parts of the state for around three months, locals in the area were affected by large scale stabbing incidents, arson and rioting with even old time commercial places like Dhalgarwad (famous for cheap clothes) being set ablaze by mobs.
In all 16 cases of stabbing, rioting, arson and loot were recorded in Shahpur, 17 in Karanj, 31 in Kalupur, 24 in Shehr Kotda, 14 in Khadia and 41 in Gaekwad Haveli respectively, sources told reporters.
At the end of the first phase of recording of statements of riot victims from certain parts of the city, Justice (Retd) Shah had said that various types of complaints had come before the commission where some persons accused police of dereliction of duty while many praised their work in curbing violence in their areas.

Though the commission has not yet announced the exact dates of recording of statements of victims of the most affected Naroda Patiya, Naroda Gaam and Gulberg Society, it is expected to be taken up during the third phase.
