Prague, June 14: Czechs voted by an overwhelming majority of 76.2 per cent for their formerly communist nation to join the European Union, according to partial official results for the two-day referendum that ended today.

The Czech statistics office said the participation rate was 54.5 per cent, based on results from 38.3 per cent of the Czech Republic's 14,765 voting sites.
A television estimate from exit polls had put the yes vote at 81 per cent and the no vote at 19 per cent.
