Beijing, June 28: China today rejected US criticism of its human rights situation and asked Washington to mind its own affairs rather than interfering in the internal affairs of
other nations on this pretext.
"China advises the United States to devote more attention
to its own problems, including improving its own human rights
situation, and to refrain from intervening in others' domestic
affairs under the pretext of human rights," Chinese Foreign
Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said.
Refuting the report titled "Supporting human rights and democracy: The US record 2002-2003" published by the US State Department, Kong said like the annual country reports on human rights practices released by the US State Department in March, unfairly reprimands the Chinese government for no reason and portrays China's human rights situation in a negative light.
"China's authoritarian government continues to suppress political, religious, and social groups, as well as individuals, that are perceived to be a threat to regime power or national stability ," the US State Department report said.
But Kong refuted the charge, saying the Chinese government upholds the promotion and protection of human rights, basic freedoms and the democratic political development of socialism in a consistent manner.
Kong also criticised the US House of Representatives' bill on the legislation related to Article 23 of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) basic law, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
When asked to comment on the bill, which urges the Hong Kong SAR to cancel the legislation, he said his country firmly opposes the move, for China regards it an intervention in the internal affairs of both China and Hong Kong.
