Kozhikode, July 04: Urging the Kerala government to "speed up" steps towards restoration of peace at violence-hit Marad, major womens organisations here decided to observe fast in the beach area today.
"While steps should be initiated to stop fundamentalist forces from exploiting the situation, the government should also speed up rehabilitation works in the area to create ground for peaceful coexistence of all communities", leaders of the associations told reporters here. Stating that no one could be denied the fundamental right to live in their homes, they said fascist forces from various quarters were threatening the displaced families from resettling in the area. "The government can`t allow such a dangerous situation to continue", they opined.
"As police and judicial investigations were on, the place of worship of minority community in the affected area should not be opened for offering prayers till the enquiries are completed", they said, adding though a handful of people belonging to a particular community was suspected to have committed the crime the entire community could not be faulted. The associations, comprising the women`s wing of Congress, Janata Dal, DYFI and some welfare organisations, had held detailed discussions with the affected people at Marad and would apprise the state women`s commission of their views at its meeting here tomorrow, they said.
M T Padma (executive member,INC), T K Vishalakshi (Mahila JD), M Ambujam (Kerala Women`s Vedi), K Ajitha (Anweshi) and Arsha Kumari (DYFI) were among those who addressed the press.
