Leeds, Nov 02: Arsenal swept to an easy victory over struggling Leeds to keep their lead in the English premier league.
Arsenal hammered Leeds United 4-1 to stay top of the premier league on Saturday (November 1) at Elland Road. Leeds paid for some poor defending as Thierry put the visitors in front, running to a long pass from Ashley Cole and beating Leeds goakepeer Paul Robinson at the near post after only eight minutes. Arsenal were in devasting form and nine minutes later, Swedish Fredrick Ljungberg found Brazilian Gilberto Silva free but the ball slipped to Robert Pires and the Frenchman made it 2-0. Leeds were hit on the break again as captain Ray Parlour combined with Dennis Berkgkamp. The shot by the Dutchman hit the post and Frenchman Henry scored from the rebound in the 33rd minute. Some Leeds supporters lost their hopes before halftime and Gilberto Silva completed Arsenal's rout five minutes after the break.


After a freekick by Bergkmap, the Brazilian midfielder collected a pass from Pires and turned a left foot shot into the net. Leeds staged a brief comeback with Alan Smith claiming a consolation goal in the 64th minute.


The 4-1 win left Arsenal on 27 points, one ahead of Chelsea and two above Manchester United.
