Seventeen people were arrested on charges of violating curfew in three police station areas of trouble-torn Aligarh town on Monday where a special police officer was stabbed to death on Sunday, official sources said. No fresh incident was reported from Aligarh where curfew continued for the second consecutive day on Monday in Delhi Gate, Sasani Gate and Kotwali police station areas, a home dept spokesman said adding that no arrest has so far been made in connection with the stabbing incident. Security arrangements have been tightened throughout Uttar Pradesh to ward off trouble as a fallout of Gujarat incidents and its telecast by the private electronic channels, the spokesman said. To a question, he said that the situation in Ayodhya was normal. The ban on inflow of people from other districts into Ayodhya would continue and there was no tension in the town, he claimed.
Most of the ‘kar sewaks’ who had come there from different parts of the country have left and only about 1000 ‘kar sewaks’ who stay in Ayodhya in normal times were however present, he added.
