New Delhi, Nov 27: Launching a scathing attack on BJP on the corruption issue, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today slammed it as "Bangaru Laxman party" which did not value social unity and equality.
Addressing a series of poll meetings across the capital, Sonia described the BJP as a "corrupt and scam tainted party" which did not value the ideals of social unity and equality as it had no contribution in the freedom struggle.
"They (BJP) had promised a clean government before they came to power at the Centre. But they are deep in corruption. Scams after scams related to defence deals, petrol pump, UTI, land and open acceptance of bribe by BJP leaders speaks loudly about their character,” she alleged at a party rally at Chiragh Dilli in South Delhi.
Lauding the contribution made by Congress leaders Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in uplifting the poor and downtrodden and strengthening social amity and justice, she said under the BJP rule at the Centre, women were insecure and weaker sections and minorities were the worst sufferers.
"I appeal to you all to vote for the congress party and not elect the corrupt and scandal hit BJP (Bangaru Laxman party) which came to power at the Centre by exploiting people's sentiments and through manipulations,” Sonia said.
AICC general secretaries Ahmed Patel, R K Dhawan, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, DPCC president Chaudhary Prem Singh besides local party candidates were present at the meetings
