Kathmandu, June 07: Terming as another "regressive step" the appointment of Surya Bahadur Thapa as Prime Minister, Nepal's agitating opposition parties today rejected a call by the new premier to end their agitation and called for revival of the Lower House of Parliament. In a statement released at the end of their meeting, the leadership of the five agitating parties described Thapa's appointment by the king as "another regressive step".

The 41 MPs belonging to Nepali Congress and CPN-UML also spurned a call by the new prime minister to end their anti-monarchy agitation. Thapa in his first state of nation address yesterday had appealed for "cooperation from all sectors, particularly from major political parties.”
They also asked the king to disclose his property and also that of late king Birendra and convene the meeting of the national assembly (upper house) as it is the only surviving Parliament body.

"The democratic rights of the people must be returned," they said.

Agitating parties yesterday convened the first day meeting of the national assembly at a ground outside the Parliament building. The two-day meeting chaired by national assembly vice chairman Ramprit Paswan concluded today.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala told reporters that the revival of the house of representatives is the only solution to the present political crisis as general elections cannot be held unless the Maoists hand over their arms.
