Cotabato (Philippines), July 11: A man claiming to be from the Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf has claimed responsibility for a bombing that killed at least three people in the southern Philippines, officials said today. But police blamed another Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front or MILF, for yesterday's attack.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo flew to Koronadal city, about 980 kilometers south of Manila, to inspect the bombing site and offer condolences.

The powerful blast ripped through the city's crowded public market, killing at least three people and injuring 26 others. Koronadal mayor Fernando Miguel told local radio station Dxms that he'd received a call from a man identifying himself as Abu Sulaiman, an alleged Abu Sayyaf officer, claiming responsibility for the blast about 30 minutes after it went off.
