Kabul, Dec 05: Averting a possible terrorist attack, police in the Afghan capital seized four kilograms of explosives today in a crowded mosque in the city centre, the interior ministry said.
Thousands of Muslims were at the mosque for traditional morning prayers for the Islamic holiday Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The explosives were discovered in a structure used to store shoes inside Kabul's blue mosque, one of the largest mosques in the city, said interior ministry spokesman Alishah Paktiawal.
Witnesses said police also found two grenades in the same location. No arrests were made.
Paktiawal said police had searched mosques across the capital after receiving intelligence information that indicated a terrorist strike might be imminent.
Authorities have stepped up security in the capital considerably this week, stopping and searching cars at intersections through out the city. Bureau Report
