Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco), which hit the headlines last year following its disinvestment, is once again in the news following the management's decision to transfer most of its Kolkata office employees. Balco Employees Union have launched an indefinite agitation against the management's decision to transfer 34 of the 39 employees in Kolkata to Korba in Chhatisgarh.
The agitation was launched by all employees here after being handed transfer letters two days ago. They gheraoed the regional manager A K Garg.
Terming the move by the Balco management as illegal, the union's general secretary Subhash Roy said that it clearly hinted at the management's plan for closure of operation in West Bengal and for which the company not only needed the union's consent, but also state government's approval.
He said that there were no indications about the impending mass transfer and the employees were given transfer letters on April 1 and asked to report for duty at Korba on April 8. He said that the union's demand was immediate withdrawal of all transfer letters. He also hinted that the union was ready to negotiate if the management offered a VRS package to the Kolkata employees.

"A large number of employees are sitting idle even in Korba hence there is no logic behind transferring more people from here," he said.

A representative of the Balco management when approached for comment, however, refrained from saying anything. Bureau Report
