Kohima, Nov 15: The Army chief, General N C Vij, today said there was an overall dramatic improvement in the security situation in the insurgency-hit Northeastern states but certain problems still persist in Manipur and Tripura. "If you look at the overall security scenario in the North East, there is a dramatic change for the better in the last five years or so and each state is doing well with much better results than before," the general told reporters here before leaving for Imphal.
Gen Vij yesterday arrived here on a two-day visit to Nagaland and Manipur and reviewed the security scenario in the region holding series of briefings with local army commanders, 3 Corp commander, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and representatives of apex tribal council Naga Ho Ho.
Describing Nagaland as the most peaceful state in the region at present, the general said there were problems in Manipur and Tripura while militant activities were concerned, adding, "of course, Mizoram is already on the path to peace as they have shunned insurgency altogether''.
Gen Vij said the situation in Assam was fast returning to normal but efforts were being made to improve the situation where the problem still lingered.
