Manila, Feb 27: A Philippine ferry with 717 passengers, caught fire in the wee hours of Friday morning just outside Manila Bay. While some 275 people were rescued from the burning vessel, 602 passengers and crew were still on board, said the country’s Coast Guard.
The ferry was travelling from the capital to Bacolod in the central Philippines when a fire broke out in the kitchen, Coast Guard chief Arthur Gosingan said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze.
The passenger manifest showed 690 adults and 27 children were aboard the Superferry 14.
A Navy official said rescue ships were on the way to the scene.
In the worst peacetime shipping disaster, more than 4,300 people died in a collision between the ferry Dona Paz and an oil tanker in Philippine waters just before Christmas 1987. Bureau Report
