Malda (WB), July 14: In a first, Congress today formed the zilla parishad board in Malda with the support of BJP and Trinamool Congress, giving it a shape of a 'mahajot' (grand alliance) against CPI-M. In the crucial election to the 33-member hung zilla parishad, Congress candidate Goutam Charkaborty defeated Satish Sarkar of CPI-M by a margin of one vote with the support of the lone BJP member. Trinamool Congress, which also has one member, extended support to the Congress.

In the last panchayat poll, Congress bagged 15 seats while BJP and TC captured one seat each. As expected, the CPI-M candidate polled 16 votes. The Marxists had won 14 seats and the two left front partners Forward Bloc and revolutionary socialist party bagged one seat each.

Both the Congress and CPI-M camps were desperate to capture the zilla parishad where no single party had got majority in the panchayat election.

Veteran Congress MP and former railway minister A B A Ghani Khan Chowdhury played a key role in cobbling up a majority for his party with the support of BJP and TC.

Khan Chowdhury, who left nothing to chance, had kept all the 15 elected members of the party at his residence here for the last few days. The veteran leader also escorted the Congress members to the circuit house from where they went to the zilla parishad office to take part in the election. Tension ran high as CPI-M workers demonstrated outside the zilla parishad office where elaborate security arrangement were made for the election of Sabhadhipati.
