New Delhi, May 17: Keeping options open for Left to join the government, CPM leader Harkishen Singh Surjeet today said, “Nothing is open and nothing is closed.” He however clarified that as of now they would extend only outside support to the Congress-led government at the Centre.
Talking to newspersons about the resolution passed by the CPM Politburo meeting, Surjeet said that we have decided not to join the government so that we may have scope to express our disagreement on some policy decisions. He said, “Our effort would be to arrive at a consensus on a common minimum programme (CMP).”
The veteran Marxist said what is important is that “we were happy that we have been successful in defeating the BJP government and installing a secular government”.
The Left parties, which have over 60 MPs in the Lok Sabha, have been discussing joining the government over the past two days. The CPI was inclined to join but said that it would go the way other Left parties choose.
Many amongst the CPM leaders too were keen to join government but the West Bengal and Kerala cadre among the party were vehemently opposed to any such move as it would erode the base on which they were elected. It seems this cadre has prevailed for the moment.
It was also felt that some of the decisions of the new Government may not be to the liking of Left Front, and so staying out could give it more freedom to manoeuvre.
