New Delhi, Dec 23: Air India and Japan Airlines have been asked to pay damages of Rs two lakh by a consumer court here to an Indian private company for releasing a consignment contrary to instructions.
The airlines were guilty of being deficient in service as they had released a consignment without receiving payment from the Indian company's client in Tokyo and for this the company had to be compensated with an amount of Rs 2,00,000, the national consumer disputes redressal commission said in a recent order.
Dhillon Exports in its complaint said it had asked Japan Airlines to release a consignment of 850 bottles of psyllium husk (Isabgol) to their client, a Japanese firm, First Research Company, only on production of documents showing the foreign firm had made payment to the Indian company.
The Indian company alleged that Japan Airlines, which was a handling agent of Air India in this transaction, delivered the consignment on Oct 24, 1994 without payment from First Research Company.
Claiming a total compensation of Rs 75 lakh, the complainant said it included an amount of Rs 10 lakh as the airliners "indulged in unethical trade practices."
