Mumbai, July 17: UPSC member S D Karnik, arrested for his alleged complicity in the multi-crore Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) scam, has resigned from the post on "moral grounds" claiming he had been falsely implicated in the case. In his resignation letter faxed to President K R Narayanan and UPSC chairman yesterday, Karnik said he had quit voluntarily and on moral grounds to maintain the dignity of UPSC, his lawyer Satish Maneshinde told reporters here today.

In his letter, Karnik said that he was falsely implicated in MPSC scam case.

Karnik, former MPSC chairman, was arrested on July 14 by anti-corruption bureau on the charge of conspiring with seven others to manipulate answer papers of MPSC examination in 1999 thereby favouring candidates in lieu of illegal gratification.

According to ACB, 398 answer sheets were replaced by the accused who broke open MPSC office to tamper with documents. Other accused are MPSC's controller of examination, Sudhakar Shirode, suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Baban Kadam, Manisha Nichat, alleged conduit, Atmaram Karge, MPSC canteen boy, Farooq Karge, computer expert, Sunil Patil and Eknath Vezre, both employees of state secretariat.

Karnik was admitted to government-owned J.J. hospital on the next day of his arrest after he complained of chest pain.

He continues to be in the hospital. Karnik has been remanded to police custody till July 20 by a special court.
