Thiruvananthapuram, July 02: Accusing the UDF government in Kerala of "brutally suppressing" student agitation, CPI-M led LDF today walked out of the assembly protesting "police excesses" on the pro-left SFI activists during yesterday's march to condemn the state's education policy. However, Chief Minister A K Antony held that the police action was prompted by "unprovoked violence" unleashed on police by the protestors. In a hard-hitting speech before leading his colleagues out of the House, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan charged the government with helping the private commercial interests in the educational field and sought to know whether the government was prepared to order an impartial probe into yesterday's "police brutalities" in the state capital and other places. Rebutting the charge of the LDF, which sought an adjournment on the issue, Antony said the marchers created a riot-like situation in many places and warned that law-enforcers would not remain a mute witness to deliberate attempts to foment trouble.
Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman turned down the opposition demand for an adjournment motion in the light of the chief minister's reply. Bureau Report
