Dhaka, Dec 02: India and Bangladesh begin another round of trade talks in New Delhi today amidst a high-pitch war of words between the two countries over reported al Qaeda and ISI activities in Bangladesh. Officials of the two sides will follow up from the commerce secretary-level meeting held in Dhaka last April that was marked by sharp dissentions.
India recently notified Bangladesh about forty items for duty-free export to India, but Dhaka insists on easier access.
The Indian side is likely to ask once again for lifting of the ban imposed by the Begum Khaleda Zia government on import of yarn and sugar through land ports after alleging of smuggling.
While India is mooting further duty-free concessions for Bangladeshi goods, a decision could depend on Dhaka's response on other trade issues.
India has also demanded setting up of more land customs stations in the northeastern states and an additional port-of-call for its vessels taking the water route through Bangladesh.
The two countries will try to iron out differences over long-term renewal of the bilateral trade agreement, informed sources said.
Temporary extension given to present trade deal expires this month. Bureau Report
