Shillong, Feb 10: The 24-hour road blockade, launched by some local organisations in Meghalaya today, largely affected vehicular movements on the National Highway 44, snapping roadlinks with Mizoram and southern parts of Assam. The road blockade was called by the Joint Action Committee of Commercial Organisation (JACCO) to protest the Meghalaya government's alleged negative response to dismantle the toll gates in entire Khasi hills, Jaintia hills and Ri-Bhoi districts.

The agitation would end at 0500 hrs tomorrow.

The blockade had a total impact here as no commercial vehicle plied on NH 44, crippling the entire road communications to Mizoram and Assam's southern part.

The JACCO demanded dismantling of all the toll gates along the national highways and the PWD roads in the state.

The state government's directive to all the deputy commissioners of three districts of east Khasi hills, Jaintia hills and Ri-Bhoi to ensure smooth movement of traffic failed to yield any result as the arterial road communication remained inactive. Prohibitory orders were also imposed in the affected districts to avoid any untoward incident.

The district administration has also warned that the obstructers would be arrested under preventive detention till declaration of district council election results.

A writ petition was filed at the Gauhati High Court in this connection and was still pending.

The state government also said leaders of the JACCO would be picked up for contempt of court as the case related to the toll gate was pending in the court.
