Washington, May 09: The United States enters familiar territory again today when it presents a draft resolution to lift sanctions against Iraq to the UN Security Council. The sanctions were imposed over a decade ago after the first Gulf War.
The last resolution, tabled at the UN Security Council, was not voted on because France, China and Russia had threatened to veto it.
But the US argues that the previous resolution was to call for war and this one is to allow Iraq to rebuild its battered economy and shattered health services.
