New Delhi, Nov 03: Accusing Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and BJP leader Uma Bharti of violating the model code of conduct on the issue of alleged publicity of a rape victim, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh today sought action against them by the Election Commission and withdrawal of BJP's recognition as a national party.
Singh told reporters here that he along with his state party president Radha Kishan Malviya submitted a memorandum to the commission bringing to its notice how an alleged rape victim Jamuni Bai was presented by BJP at a Prime Minister's public meeting at Bhopal on October 19 to "gain political mileage" and how Rs one lakh was given to her as a bribe after the model code of conduct had come into force.
Asked about Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh's response, he said since the CEC was pre-occupied, they could not meet him but left the memorandum in his office for action.
To a question whether Vajpayee was a party to it, Singh said that he was not sure and he might have been kept in the dark. "Since he was present there and everything happened in his presence, he is equally responsible," Singh said. Bureau Report
