New Delhi, Nov 21: Government today assured the Rajya Sabha that nuclear plants in the country are safe and it would seriously consider the issue of constituting a Parliamentary Committee to look into safety aspects of nuclear power plants. Stating the Nuclear Regulatory Board was functionally independent of Atomic Energy Commission, Minister of State for Atomic Energy Vasundhara Raje said all the nuclear plants in the country were being monitored by trained personnel. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Raje said "there is no question of compromising safety of workers at nuclear plants". She said the parameters of safety in the plants are within the "dose limits" and during the last five years there has been no major nuclear power accidents. As for nuclear power plants, the minister said they are safe and "there is absolutely near total compliance by all these plants". Raje conceded the demand of the opposition to consider the issue of constituting a committee for looking into safety aspects in nuclear power plants. Bureau Report
