Indore, July 26: In all 125 mayors from different countries are expected to attend a two-day South Asian Mayor's Conference to begin today in an effort to evolve "a common understanding". The meet, organised under the aegis of the All India Mayor's Council, will deliberate on "the issue of developing South Asia through experience sharing", according to host city mayor Kailash Vijaywargiya. Union Surface Transport Minister B C Khanduri will inaugurate the sessions and Union Health Minister Sushma Swaraj will be the chief guest for the concluding session. Among the host of dignitaries expected to attend the mayors meet are Rajasthan Governor Nirmal Chand Jain, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Sumitra Mahajan and BJP leader Uma Bharti.
Efforts will also be on to make the Mayor's office more powerful in India on the lines of the foreign countries and making police and other administration authorities accountable to the mayor, he said. Bureau Report
