Guwahati, June 19: The flood situation in Assam today remained critical with most of the rivers in the adversely affected districts rising, official sources said. Nearly three lakh people have been affected by the first wave of floods in five districts of the state. In flood-prone Dhemaji district the situation is grim with vast areas inundated with the road and rail communication affected. A two kilometre length railway track has been overtopped and breached due to flash floods in river Jiadhol. The National Highway has been overtopped at Jiadhol Chariali affecting road communication.

The situation in Barak valley is critical with the water level of river Katakhal at Matijuri in Hailakandi district flowing 1.37 m above danger level. More than 1.50 lakh people in 131 villages of the district have been affected by floods.
In neighbouring Karimganj district, water levels of rivers Kushiara and Singla were also flowing above the danger level.

In severely affected Nalbari district, the water level of Brahmaputra was rising and erosion is continuing in several places. More than 70,000 people in 100 villages have been affected with road communication disrupted in several places.
