New York, Oct 14: Martina Navratilova, who turns 47 on Thursday, was named to the United States Fed Cup team here along with Lisa Raymond, Meghann Shaughnessy and Alexandra Stevenson. US Fed Cup captain Billy Jean King yesterday assembled a second-string squad lacking all five of the Americans ranked in the WTA top 10 - Serena and Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Chanda Rubin.
But it might be enough to defeat Belgium in the Fed Cup semi-finals on November 19 and 20 in Moscow because world number one Kim Clijsters and number two Justine Henin-Hardenne have said they will not play for the Belgians. The two top players were unhappy that Russia, which meets France in the other semi-final, won the bid to host the Fed Cup final showdown rather than the bid from Belgium.
The US team spiced its lineup by including Navratilova, who is undefeated in Fed Cup singles and doubles, posting a 37-0 record. Navratilova will compete in the event for the first time since 1995 and become the oldest player to ever compete in the 40-year history of the Fed Cup.
"This team is very excited about going to Moscow and we are going there to win," King said. "These four players are very experienced players and Martina brings additional power to our lineup and prestige to this international competition."
The US team last won the Fed Cup in 2000 when it defeated Spain 5-0 on home soil. Bureau Report
