Beijing, July 03: While maintaining diplomatic silence on sending Chinese troops to Iraq, Beijing today urged all governments involved in rebuilding Baghdad to faithfully implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1483 to restore peace and stability there. Asked specifically whether China is willing to send troops to Iraq to maintain peace in the country in the post-war scenario, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan side-stepped the question at a regular briefing here.
Commenting on the situation in Iraq and increasing attacks on Anglo-American troops, Kong stressed that countries that are involved in rebuilding Iraq should adhere to the UNSC Resolution 1483 and implement it in real earnest. “We hope the Resolution 1483 of the UNSC adopted in May should be implemented. We also hope that the situation in Iraq could become tranquil with relevant parties concerned implementing the UNSC resolution in real earnest," Kong said. Resolution 1483 passed by the UNSC on May 22 lifted civilian sanctions on Iraq and provided for termination of the oil-for-food programme within six months, transferring responsibility for the administration of any remaining activity to the authority representing the occupying powers. Noting that the Iraq issue is faced with many questions, he said in this regard, UNSC Resolution 1483 has provided for overall planning of the post-war reconstruction in Iraq and also gives specific role for the UN. "We hope the various parties will take the Resolution 1483 as the legal basis to solve all the problems properly after the war in Iraq," the spokesman added. Bureau Report
