New Delhi, Feb 08: Government has set a target of electrifying all villages by 2007, according to non-conventional energy sources secretary A V Singh. Speaking at a conference on non-conventional energy, Singh said that nearly 80,000 villages and over 75 million households who lack access to electricity would be provided with power by 2007.
He said that around 18,000 villages would have to be provided with electricity from non-conventional sources as grid connectivity was unviable in such remote areas.
The country was endowed with abundant sun light and wind energy which could be harnessed to ensure that at least 10 per cent of future energy requirements come from renewable sources, he said.
A K Vora, managing director of Tata BP Solar India, said that government should put in place a fiscal policy regime to encourage capacity addition in the sector.
He also sought incentives from the government in the form of interest subsidy to the tune of 15 per cent.
