Colombo, Oct 12: Curfews in northeastern Sri Lanka were lifted today even as Tamil tiger rebels called a work stoppage to protest the killing of seven men by police, officials said. Trees and barricades were set up along the road to block traffic in several areas of eastern province today as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) staged a day of protest, officials said. Three people were killed and another 34 wounded in a grenade attack in Trincomalee district of eastern province during a similar strike yesterday.
The strike was called in protest at Wednesday's killing of seven Tamil men by police when they tried to storm a commando base 180 kilometres south of Trincomalee. Another 14 people, including five police commandos, were injured. Bureau Report
