In Assam, the problem of infiltration was mainly due to the act. According to the 2001 census, the average national growth of population was 41 to 48 per cent but in Assam it was above 55 per cent, he said. The minister pointed out that during the last ten years, 3.63 lakh cases were registered under the IMDT Act but only 1,500 of them have been deported while the government of West Bengal has deported four lakh Bangladeshis as there is no IMDT Act in the state.
