Southampton, Mar 15: Southampton beat Liverpool 2-0 in English Premier League.
New manager Paul Sturrock got off to a flying start as Southampton completed the league double over Liverpool for the first time on Saturday (March 14). It was a flattering result as the visitors looked the more dangerous side throughout but goalkeeper Antti Niemi kept Southampton in it and James Beattie then put them ahead after 51 minutes. Michael Owen hit a post and missed a sitter before completing a miserable day in the 73rd minute when he had a weak penalty saved, leaving Kevin Phillips's deflected shot five minutes from time to settle the matter.
