New Delhi, Aug 07: Political parties and trade unions today reacted sharply against the Supreme Court ruling opposing government employees' right to strike, with most of them saying it was an infringement on the democratic rights of the people.
The matter also came up in the Rajya Sabha when Congress and Left Party members said the apex court order would have "disastrous consequences" and asking government how it proposed to protect the rights of the workers.
In Kolkata, a massive demonstration took place outside the writers' building where coordination committee of West Bengal government employees and state government employees union leaders protested the ruling and said the workers "will retain this right through struggle".
AICC general secretary G K Vasan, in a statement in Chennai, demanded that the Tamil Nadu government take back all the dismissed employees and said it was its "moral responsibility" to look into their genuine demands and fulfil them.
