Chennai, May 31: BJP today said there was no danger
to the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh following the
withdrawal of support by Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal.
"The BSP-BJP coalition government in that state is
stable. Numbers are in our favour and there is no threat to
our ministry," BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu told a press
conference here.
On chances of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh's return to the BJP's fold, he said "our doors are closed to him,".
Earlier releasing a book, "our constitution-distortions done during the emergency-and the need for a review," authored by BJP National Council member Dr H V Hande, he said such books would only guide the future generations on the ills of emergency.
Defending Article 356 of the constitution, he said it would help a strong Centre, but its usage should be at a minimum.
He said the present anti-defection law encouraged "wholesale defection but barred retail defection" adding that there was need for a fresh law.
The report of the Venkatachaliah Committee, which reviewed the working of the constitution, should be subjected to a nation-wide debate to enable the Centre to take steps to plug the loopholes in the constitution. Bureau Report
