Chamba (Himachal Pradesh), Nov 17: The Saach Pass in Chamba district has been closed for seven months following the season's first heavy snowfall today, official sources said here. The pass, situated at an altitude of 4,390 metres, would remain closed till may and reopen for pedestrians in June next year, they said.
Meanwhile, the Himalayan ranges in Himachal Pradesh and the adjoining massifs of Pir Panjal hills in Jammu and Kashmir have been experiencing first heavy snowfall of the season since yesterday, sources said.
There is a sharp fall in the temperature and biting cold wave is sweeping the region, they said, adding the heavy snow is good for the crops of the region.
The experts working in the hydroelectric projects said heavy snowfall on the mountain ranges of the state and the adjoining hills of Jammu and Kashmir would be a boon to power generation, irrigation and drinking water supply schemes in the plains during summer.
