Police said on Wednesday that they had detained around 50 people in their hunt for the four gunmen who shot dead four policemen and injured 20 others outside the American Center in Kolkata. Hundreds of detectives scoured Kolkata for the unidentified men who rode up to the Centre on motorbikes early Tuesday morning and opened fire with AK-47s at several dozen police guards changing duty.
Kolkata police chief Sujoy Chakraborty said two Bangladeshi nationals and an unnamed Islamic scholar were among those detained for questioning in connection with the attack.
Security was stepped up at about eight diplomatic missions, including the consulates of Britain, France, Russia and the United States. "The Calcutta police are not equipped to deal with such attacks but we are doing our best," Chakraborty said. Policemen here are normally armed with antiquated bolt-action rifles.
There were more than 30 police guards outside the American Centre at the time of the attack, but not a single retaliatory shot was fired at the gunmen who squeezed off some 50 rounds before riding away.
Chakraborty ruled out any possibility of a joint inquiry into the attack with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). "They can probe the terror attack on its own but there will be no joint inquiry," he said. Coincidentally, FBI director Robert Mueller was in New Delhi when Tuesday`s attack took place.
Mueller said Tuesday he wanted to "wait and see" before describing the incident as a "terrorist strike".
"The identities of those involved and the motivation behind the attack are being looked into. We will have to wait and see the full facts," he said.
