United Nations, Oct 25: Anti-war groups are lobbying with the Security Council members to oppose Washington's plan for military strikes against Baghdad, arguing that no link has yet been established between terrorist attacks on the US and Iraq.
The groups, which included relatives of those who died in the attack, decried the Bush administration trying to wage a war in the name of those killed in the terrorist attacks. They told reporters yesterday that they are sending e-mails, faxes and making phone calls to the Council members to press that they defeat the resolution introduced by the United States.
The US should not try to dominate the world by using or threatening to use its military strength but utilize its resources to uplift the poor and provide them basic necessities.
The best way to fight terrorism is through helping the world attain a higher standard of life and not taking military action, they added.

Arguing that terrorism is born out of desperation and cannot be eliminated by using force only, they said any war would adversely affect America's economy and cost the country friends.

Medea Benjamin of San Francisco-based human rights group Global Exchange said they are sending tens of thousand faxes as well as making phone calls to impress on the diplomats the need to avoid war.
