Imphal, Mar 04: Lack of information about new techniques, innovations and government facilities is impeding the growth of the weaving industry in Manipur. Mr R Banikya, deputy director of the weavers' service centre, Imphal said this during a one-day dyeing workshop-cum-design exhibition held here yesterday.
The Weavers' Service Centre in Imphal is in its 25th year of inception, yet not many weavers in the state are aware of this centre, he added.
The weavers are not aware of modern technologies and continue to rely on primitive techniques, hampering the growth of the weaving industry.
The Weavers' Service Centre has been conducting a series of workshops and training sessions in various parts of the state to spread awareness about modern looms and equipment as well as other management, production, design and export business aspects, Mr Banikya said.
Mr H Biren Singh, OSD, Handloom Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Manipur said a new scheme titled Deen Dayal Hatkargah Protsahan Yojana is quite comprehensive and encompasses almost all essential components such as getting financial aid for loom and accessories, design inputs, transferring design from paper to fabric, publicity, exhibitions, training, he said.
