According to the state administration of production
safety, 31 miners were working in the Xing`ergou mine in the
city of Datong where the blast occurred at around 6:40 am
today (04:00 IST), and only one managed to escape.

Shanxi is China`s top producer of coal and similar
mine accidents are common there.
Last week, over 50 miners were killed in a string of
mine accidents in China which were mostly caused by flooding.
Rescuers are still trying to save over 30 miners
trapped underground in southwest China`s Chongqing and east
China`s Shandong province.
Mine accidents claim thousands of lives every year in
China. Authorities blame most accidents on lax safety
standards in mines run by village and private entrepreneurs in
remote regions.
