Kolkata, July 17: The Comptroller Auditor General of India (CAG) has recommended closure of 46 of the total 84 public sector undertakings (PSUs) in West Bengal in view of their poor turnover and continuous losses during the past few years. "In view of poor turnover and continuous losses, the government may either improve performance of 43 government companies and three statutory corporations or consider their closure," CAG report for the year ended March, 2002, placed in the State Assembly on Thursday said.

The report said the turnover of 30 government companies (working 23, non-working 7) and two working statutory corporations had been less than Rs 5 crore in each of the preceding five years of their latest finalised accounts.

Similarly, 13 working government companies and one working statutory corporation had been incurring losses for five consecutive years leading to negative net worth.
The state had a total 84 PSUs comprising 73 government companies (65 working and 8 non-working) and 11 statutory corporations (all working) as on March 2002. Bureau Report
