Bangkok, July 31: Conjoined twins born in Thailand, sharing all their organs from the neck downwards, were being treated in intensive care and given a fifty per cent chance of survival, doctors said today.
The baby girls were delivered by caesarian section early yesterday in ban Pheu district of Udon Thani province, said the doctor who delivered them, Ratchanai Mahapho.
The twins, weighing 4.1 kilogrammes and born to a 20-year-old first-time mother, were transferred to a hospital in nearby Khon Kaen where they were and receiving respiratory assistance.
"Their chance of survival is less than 50 per cent," he said. "An operation to separate them is not in question now. It's too far ahead," Ratchanai told newspersons.
Doctors at Khon Kaen Hospital said that the family had requested that no further details be released to the media.
