Dhaka, Dec 04: Alleging that Border Security Force is obstructing construction of an embankment on the Kalindi- Ichamati rivers in western Satkhira district, Bangladesh has asked India to ensure that such hindrance was stopped. The construction of the embankment to halt river erosion has remained suspended since Nov 28 due to obstruction by BSF, the 'Daily Star' quoting official sources reported today.
The officials quoted by the paper said Bangladesh had sent two urgent letters to the government of India on Sunday asking it to take necessary measures so that the construction of the embankment could be resumed soon. The embankment, which is funded by Asian Development Bank, is being constructed as per an agreement signed between India and Bangladesh at the joint rivers commission to check river erosion on Bangladesh side. Seventy per cent of the construction is already over, the daily said.
The BSF intervened in the embankment project after Bangladesh objected to the construction of a concrete jetty on the opposite side of the river in mid-November, the report said.
BSF and Bangladesh Rifles traded heavy fire at two border outposts in Satkhira over the jetty construction.
Meanwhile, another report published today said a Bangladeshi national was killed in western Kushtia district in BSF firing when he was fishing in river Padma yesterday. Bureau Report
