Mumbai, Aug 05: `Shyam Benegal', a book written by noted film historian and movie critic Sangeeta Datta and published by British Film Institute in its `World Director Series', would be released at the British council auditorium on August 25. Datta traces Shyam Benegal's career with its beginnings in political cinema. She demonstrates how the struggles of women and the marginalised section of Indian society have found an eloquent expression in films, a release from the British Council of India said here.

In this first major overview of the director's work, Datta also explains how Benegal presents both a stark contrast to Bollywood and yet also maintains many creative continuities - both with commercial cinema and his distinguished predecessor Satyajit Ray. She also goes on to establish how no other director has come close to painting such a compelling and vivid portrait of Modern India.

Dutta, a film historian, lecturer and a documentary film maker, also runs a London-based film society, `In Focus', which promotes south Asian cinema in the UK. She is a member of Firpresci, the International Federation of Film Critics, the release added.
