Beijing, Aug 27: At least five people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless by typhoon Krovanh that hit the southern Chinese provinces of Hainan and Guangdong and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region earlier this week, an official report said today.
The deaths have been reported from Guangdong where more than 10,000 houses have been destroyed. In Hainan, the worst disaster to hit the province brought gales and rainstorms, toppling some 1,700 houses and devastating 16 small reservoirs on the island, affecting more than 1.8 million people and inflicting direct economic losses estimated at 683 million yuan (about 82 million US dollars), Xinhua reported.
The provincial government had sent four disaster relief teams to the hardest hit areas to guide the rehabilitation and reconstruction work.
Serious damage was also reported from Beihai city in Guangxi, where the local observatory said it was the biggest typhoon to hit the place since 1954. An estimated 988 million yuan (about 119 million US dollars) worth of property was swept away from Beihai by typhoon Krovanh.
